marmalade - January can jam attempt
January days
What a cute grin, huh?

Hats
This hat came with an outfit sized 6-9 months. So far there has never been a hat from an outfit set that fits Chickadee. I was complaining about how the clothes manufacturers can't seem to manage to make a hat that matches the size of the clothes, then it hit me: maybe my daughter just has an especially large head. This picture was taken on the 17th of January.

a few stats around the 5 month mark
A picture from the pre-blog days for your viewing pleasure
Today at the doctor Chickie got her final shot before the MMR booster at one year. She weighed in at 15 pounds 10 ounces or 7.1 kilos, with a long sleeve onesie, an empty diaper and tights on. She was measured at 68 centimeters or 26.77 inches. According to one website that makes her the 58th percentile for weight and the 95th for height. I had a feeling that she had been doing some growing in the length department. She still has cute chub though, around her wrists and elbows, and her little ham legs :-)

some words on wednesday
She really is developing SO rapidly. Sometimes we just stare at her pulling herself slowly around the room and gape. It really is amazing how things can change in five months. Yesterday when we gave her a bath she spent the whole time trying to pull herself to standing on the edge of the baby bath. She was so cute with her little bum up in the air! Today she also wanted to pull herself up on my legs when I was sitting on the floor. She got up to her knees and then rocked back and forth.
At therapy today we waited with a mother of another little boy with her 4 month old son. He was born just 18 days after Chickadee. When they first met they were sitting on the floor on their tummies, face to face. Chick was looking at him just like she looks at stuffed animals, like she's trying to figure out if they're alive or not. Then she was trying to reach toward the boy's face, and he let out a little squawk. She jumped and then cried and cried. Poor baby. I could comfort her, then he'd make noises again and it started all over again. I guess we have to get her around babies the same age as her. She's been around babies older than her, and babies younger than her.
Last year I really wanted to do canning and preserving - especially over the summer: peaches, plums etc. to eat through the winter. Although I did buy the jars I never actually made anything. So, the jars are sitting on a shelf, taking up valuable kitchen space. Anyway, I stumbled on a website called Tigress in a Jam (google it!) and she's hosting something called Can Jam in which every month there's a different food and you're supposed to figure out something to do with it and can it. January is citrus. So, I tried my hand at marmalade today. After actually doing it I realized how ridiculously easy it is to make jams. Just fruit and sugar, or maybe not even sugar? My marmalade isn't amazing, but I have been dipping into all day. I talked to Gabi's mom about how to do it better (I just threw orange slices and sugar into a pot and boiled the heck out of it) and she said I should boil it for a long time and then add the sugar just the end. Another website says to leave it all soaking overnight, which I think brings out pectin. Anyway. I think I have a handle on how to actually can the stuff too. Even just pouring the hot jam into a jar and screwing the lid on made it seal. If I end up making something pretty I'll take a picture and put it on here. In the meantime, I'll just keep enjoying my sugary orange sauce. It's really really good with plain yogurt, and today I made polenta with honey and sour cream, and put that on top with some shredded coconut.
One last photo before I just keep babbling on and on:

January 11th - a little blue sky and a spring in my step
Today I didn't have to work after 3, AND the sun was out, AND the sky was blue AND the temperature was rather balmy for January. With a baby warming me up, it felt so good to walk without scarf and hat. So often in the last month we return home in the dark without much chance to really enjoy being outside. So today with a surprise early finish I decided to do some walking before heading home. We walked through Varosmajor park, my old pregnancy stomping grounds (I walked through that park twice a day almost everyday), and then around in the castle. The sun was just starting to go down so the light was ever so nice. I did my usual and took pictures of the silhouettes of trees.
There's an art museum inside and intend to go soon, as soon as there's a good special exhibition.
a few more catch - up pictures
My old friend Adam was in town. He loves Budapest, which makes me feel proud of the city. We went out to eat in a restaurant called Kőleves (stone soup). Chickadee came and was so easy and well behaved the whole time, though she wanted to try everybody's food.
Her favorite sleeping position. Also mine.
splish splash i was takin' a bath
Chickadee loves loves loves to take a bath now! I think it helps that she can sit up in the water now - she still doesn't like to lie down. I think she looks like a hot tubber the way she's sitting there. The bath really helps her go to sleep now too - all the hot water I guess. The routine is that about two hours after her last nap (she takes a late afternoon nap) which is usually about 7 or 7:30 she goes in the bath, with a massage after, then rocking in the rocking chair. She doesn't necessarily STAY asleep, I still have to feed her like every hour and soothe her back to sleep, but she basically stays asleepish until morning.
